The existence of landfill can be a source of manganese (Mn) pollutants in the environment. Mn can cause toxic for kidney if excessive intake. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between Mn concentrations in ground water with kidney function disorders in the people living around the Cipayung Landfill. The research was a cross sectional study with 104 respondents which included Cipayung and Pasir Putih village. Kidney function disorders was determined by the level of proteinuria or hematuria determined by the semi-quantitative dipstick method. While the Mn measurements used SNI 6989.5: 2009. The results showed that Mn levels of ground water at 9 (13,6%) sampling points exceeded drinking water quality standards and 17 people (16.3%) showed changes in kidney function. Mn concentration were between 0.06 mg / L-0.84 mg /L. There was no relationship between Mn concentration in ground water with kidney function disorders. While risk factors for hypertension and obesity had a significant relationship with kidney function disorders (OR 4.20; 95%; CI: 1.27-13.84;
OR 3.64; 95%; CI: 1.10-12.07). The conclusions of this study is risk factors for hypertension and obesity have a significant relationship with kidney function disorders.
This study aims to determine the level of risk and influence of SO2 exposure to respiratory tract symptomsin housewives living around the steel industry. This study uses the Environmental Health Risk Assessment (EHRA) approach to estimate the health risk in the area around the steel industry and uses the design of a cross-sectional study to illustrate the effect of intake SO2 on respiratory symptoms carried out in November - December 2019.
Samples in this research numbered 109 housewives obtained by proportional stratified random sampling. SO2 concentrations were measured at 9 points in 3 zones around the steel industry by the pararosanilin method and analyzed by spectrophotometer.
The results showed that Sukadanau Village has an RQ (Risk Quotient) ≤ 1. As many as 39,4% of housewives experience symptoms of respiratory tract disorders and obtained no influence of intake SO2 on respiratory symptoms. Recommendations that can be developed to carry out risk management in areas around the steel industry are monitoring SO2 concentrations on a regular basis so that SO2 remains at safe concentrations <0,201 mg/m3
Environmental problems that can not be avoided in various countries is air pollution. There are many causes of air pollution, one of which is caused by dust particles, especially in PM2,5. PM2,5 is defined as ambient air particles that are up to 2.5 microns in size. Air pollution occurs not only in the ambient air, but also in the indoor air. This study aim to determine the relationship of indoor PM2,5 concentration exposure against lung function impairment of adults living around Industrial Area Tegalratu Village, Ciwandan District, Cilegon. This research uses a cross-sectional study design. Data collection was conducted on April to May 2022. The participants were identified using random sampling method based on inclusion and exclusion criteria that have been set. The number of samples in this study were 200 adults. The analytical results obtained of 124 adults (87.3%) had PM2,5 concentrations in their homes were not qualified to suffer from lung function impairment, while there were 34 adults (58.6%) whose PM2,5 concentrations in their homes were qualified to suffer from lung function impairment. The results of this study found a significant associated between exposure to PM2,5 concentrations of lung function impairment in adults living in industrial areas. Confounding variables that affect exposure to PM2,5 concentrations include the use of mosquito coils, nutritional status, age, disease history, cooking fuels, type of house floor and smoking status. The conclusion of this study found a significant relationship between PM2,5 concentration, age, nutritional status, and type of house floor with the incidence of lung function impairment.
The development of industrial sector in Indonesia, beside its positive impacts, also generates negative impacts on environment such as mercury pollution in water. Pontianak City is one potential area to be polluted by mercury because, among others, Pontianak City is gold mining location.Mercury as pollutant in Kalimantan Island was predicted to be present as many as 61 tones each year for small-scale gold mining activity. Study by Tanjungpura University in August 2000 indicated that mercury level along the Kapuas River and its small canals, and in river biotic (several types of fish), as well as in PDAM (Local Office of Drinking Water) water supply had exceeded the accepted limit. This pollution needs to be seriously handled because Kapuas River is main water provider for PDAM of Pontianak City.This study aims to obtain information on the magnitude of mercury exposure measured in hair mercury level among community of Pontianak City and to understand the relationship between respondent's characteristics (age, sex, working status/job, and length of stay) and fish eating habit with hair mercury level. This study was secondary data analysis from the primary study by Health Office of West Kalimantan and Directorate of Water Hygiene year 2000, employed a cross-sectional design, with community members subscribed to PDAM as population. 240 sample was chosen using cluster method, head/member of a family, minimum age of 15 years old, stay at least 1 year, and willing to participate in hair and urine tests.The results showed that the average mercury level in hair was 0.9512 µg/g (95 % Cl: 0,4534-1,4490), median 0.2900 µg/g, the lowest mercury level was 0.00 µg/g and the highest was 52.57µg/g. The distribution of hair mercury level was 79 respondents had 0,00-0,09 µg/g, 26 respondents had > 1,47 µg/g and the rest had 0,10-1,30 µg/g mercury level.The age group of 25-34 years old had greater proportion of respondents with higher level of hair mercury compared to other age ranges. Respondents who eat fish daily had higher proportion of high hair mercury level compared to other frequency of fish eating.There is no relationship between sex, working status / job, and length of stay in Pontianak with hair mercury level.Observing the increasing trend of water mercury pollution, the collaboration between Health Office of West Kalimantan and other related sectors needs to be improved, as to provide socialization / education to the community members on the dangers of mercury pollution, routine mercury level check both in the river and fish:, and needs more appropriate alternative technology.There is a need to conduct similar research among "the high risk group" including the documentation on how many fish eaten daily (in weight) as well as checking its mercury content. Other method is by examining mercury level in hair centimeter by centimeter because each centimeter of hair shaft equals to a month exposure.
