Abstrak: This study took place in eastern Massachusetts and included respondents from the Harvard Study of Moods and Cycles Cohort 1, enrolled between 1995 and 1997, and the Harvard Study of Moods and Cycles Cohort 2, enrolled between 2005 and 2009. In prospectively assessing rates of new-onset depression in 2 populations of late-reproductive-aged women with no Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fourth Edition) lifetime history of depression, we were surprised to find far lower rates of depression in the population with greater racial diversity and lower socioeconomic status, contrary to what had been reported in the scientific literature. To better understand why these disparate results occurred, we assessed confounding and outcome misclassification as potential explanations for the discrepancy. After determining that these were unlikely explanations for the findings, we explored 2 potential sources of selection bias: one induced by self-referral of healthy participants into the study and the other induced by the design of the study itself. We concluded that both types of selection bias were likely to have occurred in this study and could account for the observed difference in rates.

Abstrak: Pesticides are ubiquitous neurotoxicants, and several lines of evidence suggest that exposure may be associated with depression. Epidemiologic evidence has focused largely on organophosphate exposures, while research on other pesticides is limited. We collected detailed pesticide use history from farmers recruited in 1998-2000 in France. Among 567 farmers aged 37-78 years, 83 (14.6%) self-reported treatment or hospitalization for depression. On the basis of the reported age at the first such instance, we used adjusted Cox proportional hazards models to estimate hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals for depression (first treatment or hospitalization) by exposure to different pesticides. The hazard ratio for depression among those who used herbicides was 1.93 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.95, 3.91); there was no association with insecticides or fungicides. Compared with nonusers, those who used herbicides for < 19 years and ≤ 19 years (median for all herbicide users, 19 years) had hazard ratios of 1.51 (95% CI: 0.62, 3.67) and 2.31 (95% CI: 1.05, 5.10), respectively. Similar results were found for total hours of use. Results were stronger when adjusted for insecticides and fungicides. There is widespread use of herbicides by the general public, although likely at lower levels than in agriculture. Thus, determining whether similar associations are seen at lower levels of exposure should be explored.

Depression is one of the most common mental disorders globally and has a significant impact on quality of life. According to the 2023 Indonesia Health Survey (SKI), the prevalence of depression in Indonesia is 1.4%, with adolescents being the most vulnerable group to depression. However, only 10.4% of adolescents with depression receive treatment. This low figure may be attributed to the stigma in society and the lack of awareness regarding mental health, which causes adolescents to refrain from expressing their psychological conditions. This study aims to identify the determinants of depression among adolescents aged 15 – 24 years in Indonesia. The study design used was cross-sectional with chi-square statistical tests for bivariate and logistic regression for multivariate using complex sample analysis. The data were obtained from the 2023 SKI, with 94,545 samples. The results of this study indicate that the prevalence of depression among adolescents aged 15-24 years in Indonesia is 2%. The most influential factors associated with depression were alcohol consumption, followed by the history of non-communicable diseases, gender, area of residence, employment status, and age. All variables were statistically associated with depression (p-value < 0.05), except for employment status. Behavioral factors and health conditions have a major contribution to depression in adolescents. Relevant interventions are needed particularly regarding alcohol use and strengthening support for adolescents with non-communicable diseases.

There are several well-documented factors that contribute to elderly depression, however there haven't been any research in Indonesia comparing elderly populations in urban and rural areas. In order to better effectively manage depression issues in the elderly, a research across groups is required. The role of biopsychosocial is viewed as an interrelated holistic study to determine the extent of its impact on depression in the elderly using data from the Indonesian Family Life Survey waves 4 and 5. The results show that there are differences in the risk of depression in the elderly in urban and rural Indonesia. Changes in physical condition and subjective well-being are risks of depression in urban elderly people. Meanwhile, for rural elderly, changes in physical condition, changes in mutual trust, changes in community participation and changes in marital status were found as risks for elderly depression.

Abstrak: By using data from wave 2 (in 1996) and wave 3 (in 2000-2001) of the US-based National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, we investigated the association between young women's body weight and depression during the transition to adulthood. Respondents (n = 5,243) were 13-18 years of age during wave 2 and 19-25 years of age during wave 3. We used Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale scores to classify young women as never depressed, consistently depressed, experiencing depression onset, or experiencing depression recovery from wave 2 to wave 3. Results from adjusted multinomial logistic regression models indicated that respondents who experienced significant weight gain were at risk of depression onset. Normal weight (adjusted odds ratio = 2.10, 95% confidence interval: 1.14, 3.84) and overweight (adjusted odds ratio = 1.86, 95% confidence interval: 1.15, 2.99) adolescent girls who were obese by young adulthood, as well as young women who were consistently obese during adolescence and young adulthood (adjusted odds ratio = 1.97, 95% confidence interval: 1.19, 3.26), had roughly twice the odds of depression onset as did young women who were never overweight. We concluded that weight gain and obesity are risk factors for depression onset during the transition to adulthood. Policies prioritizing healthy weight maintenance may help improve young women's mental health as they begin their adult lives.
