Background: Low Birth Weight (LBW) remains a global health issue. Although it has decreased by 1,9% from the previous decade, this reduction is still insufficient to achieve the Global Nutrition Targets. LBW predominantly occurs in low- and middle-income countries. According to the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey report, the prevalence of LBW in Indonesia stands at 6,1%. A high proportion of infants with LBW in a population indicates a complex health problem, as it reflects long-term maternal malnutrition, poor health conditions, and inadequate maternal healthcare services during pregnancy. Objective: To determine the factors associated with the incidence of LBW in Indonesia based on the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey data. Methods: This study performed a secondary analysis using data from the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey, employing a cross-sectional study design. The research sample consisted of 57.512 live-born infants from single pregnancies (singleton births). Univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analyses were performed using the Chi-Square test and multiple logistic regression. Results: The prevalence of LBW in Indonesia based on the 2023 SKI data was 5%. Factors independently associated with the incidence of LBW in Indonesia after adjusting for other variables were gestational age (APOR = 7,274; 95% CI: 6,312–8,382), maternal nutritional status (APOR = 1,898; 95% CI: 1,586–2,271), infant's sex (APOR = 0,733; 95% CI: 0,644–0,833) , ownership of Family Prosperity Card/KKS (APOR = 1,212; 95% CI: 1,024–1,436), cooking fuel (APOR = 1,217; 95% CI: 1,018–1,456), place of residence (APOR = 0,816; 95% CI: 0,710–0,937), and middle-class economic status (APOR = 0,795; 95% CI: 0,663–0,952). Conclusion: This study highlights the critical importance of improving nutritional and health status for both mothers and infants.
LBW is brith weight less than 2500 grams (up to 2499 grams). LBW can cause prenatal death and pain, and increase the risk of causing non-communicable diseases. The proportion of LBW in Indonesia from the 2007 IDHS period, 2012, 2017 was stable and there was no different from 2007 to 2017. Unwanted pregnancies became one of the risk factors for LBW. Unwanted pregnancy is a pregnancy that occurs outside of planning. Because a husband or wife partner cannot use contraception, there is no access to family planning services which causes pregnancy, while the physical or psychological condition of the partner is not ready and rejects the pregnancy. The proportion of unwanted pregnancies in the 2007, 2012, 2017 IDHS period is stable.
Introduction. Indonesia is a country that still many health services located inperipheral areas with minimal facilities and rarely have experts to predict the weightof the baby at birth.Methods. This study using cross sectional study design. The inclusion criteriamaternal last child, a baby was born alive, and a single baby, obtained a sample of23.689.Results. Variables are a risk factor for LBW is gestational age (POR 2,01), age(POR 1,28), parity (POR 1,56), maternal height (POR 1,48) and complications(POR 1,46). ROC analysis obtained an area under the curve to identify the LBW of0,602. Value cut-off point for scoring 4 prediction and sensitivity of 59,8%.Conclusion. Gestational age, age, parity, height, and complications are risk factorsand can be used to predict the baby to be born at risk of LBW.Keywords: birth weight babies, sensitivity, predictive.
Labor complications are a primary cause of maternal mortality in Indonesia and are influenced by various factors. Maternal age is a known risk factor, yet the specific factors for each age group require distinct analysis to inform targeted interventions. This study aims to determine the overview and risk factors for labor complications based on maternal age groups in Indonesia. This study utilized a cross-sectional design, analyzing secondary data from the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (SKI). The sample consisted of 70,681 mothers who met the inclusion criteria. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Chi-Square test. The study found differences in the proportion of childbirth complications in Indonesia across young (15.1%), ideal (16.9%), and older (19.2%) age groups, as well as differences in factors associated with complications in each age group. The most dominant types of childbirth complications in young and ideal age groups were prolonged labor and premature rupture of membranes, while breech presentation was more common in older age groups. Factors consistently associated with childbirth complications across all three maternal age groups were education level, area of residence, parity, pregnancy planning, history of pregnancy complications, birth attendant, place of delivery, and source of delivery financing. Factors specific to the ideal and older age groups were partner's education level, birth spacing, and history of Antenatal Care (ANC) visits. Factors that were only significantly associated with specific age groups included husband or family support, which only affected the ideal age group, and maternal employment status, which only affected the older age group. Early detection and differentiated risk management tailored to each age group are necessary. targeting specific risk factors, both clinical (e.g., prolonged labor in young age, hypertension in older age) and sociodemographic.
